Some concepts we are continuously working on are: spelling our names, counting, recognizing shapes and colours, letter and number recognition, and having great manners while always being a good friend. We teach these concepts in a fun, interactive way that involves games, stories, singing and dancing, fine motor activities, and gross motor activities
In 1973, the Province of Ontario passed the Regional Municipality of Durham Act to establish Durham as one of five Regional governments in the Greater Toronto Area. The Act annexed and amalgamated 21 former municipalities of the counties of Ontario, Northumberland and Durham to form eight area municipalities: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby. Members of the first Regional Council were elected late in 1973 and the Regional Municipality of Durham began operating on January 1, 1974.
All children are special and each has his/her own personality, strengths and weaknesses and rates and ways of learning. As educators, it is our responsibility to tap into how a particular child learns, and develop strategies to help the child master all basic skills. It is our responsibility to capitalize on a child's strengths and give them the required tools to deal with their weaknesses. Smart Start Learning Centres is committed to helping the whole child develop and reach their potential. Emotional, physical, cognitive and social growth are all essential aspects of a child's development and thus our centre's programs are geared to promote these facets of a child's development. Children who feel secure and appreciated in their surroundings gain confidence. It is therefore one of our goals to create a safe, clean and secure environment for the children in our care. We will try our best to avoid numerous or frequent staff changes by giving our staff a pleasant work environment. This consistency for children increases the level of security.
