How to throw Mom a luxurious spa day for Mother's Day

October 13, 2015

Commercial spa packages can be pricey. They also may not be exactly what Mom wants. Why not show her how much you care by giving Mom the full spa treatment at home instead. Here's how to throw a luxurious spa-filled Mother's Day your mom won't soon forget.

How to throw Mom a luxurious spa day for Mother's Day

1. Minimize noise and distractions

First, schedule a time convenient for your mom to have the spa day. Set it up on Mother's Day or find an alternative day that works with her schedule.

  • Make sure the house is quiet, clean and calm.
  • Find a babysitter for younger children.
  • Turn on some soothing music to drown out outdoor noises.

2. Prepare spa fare

Most spas offer light and healthy fare, like small cucumber sandwiches, freshly chopped vegetables and pieces of gourmet cheese.

  • Prepare a platter with snacks like these and brew some hot tea and cucumber water.
  • Offer your mom some of these delicious snacks at the start of the day.
  • Alternatively, offer your mom her favourite snack if it's something that would be served at a spa.

3. Create a homemade facial

You needn't buy expensive beauty products for the facial. You can find all the ingredients you require in the kitchen.

  • Mix together plain yogurt, mashed banana, apple cider vinegar and olive oil. Then massage the mixture into her face for one minute. Wash off the mixture with cool water, and pat the skin dry.

After her face has been cleansed, apply a mask.

  • You can make a homemade face mask with a mashed strawberry, 1 teaspoon of honey and 3 tablespoons of powdered milk.
  • Apply the mask, wait 15 minutes, and wash it off with warm water.

4. Gently soak her feet

While the face mask is drying, lead your mom to a comfortable chair. Gently place her feet in a pedicure bucket filled with a homemade foot soak you've created. If you don't have a pedicure bucket, use a container that is deep enough for her feet.

  • Make a rejuvenating foot soak by mixing 1/2 cup of honey, 1 tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar and a sliced lemon into warm water.
  • If you have large, flat smooth stones in your garden, place them at the bottom of the bucket for a warm foot rest. Remember to first scrub them clean.

5. Give her a soothing massage

Enlist some help to give your mom a relaxing massage.

  • Have your mom's partner give her a relaxing 30-minute back massage with aromatic oils in her bedroom.
  • If you're giving your mom a spa day on your own, give her a soothing foot massage for 15 minutes followed by a hand massage for 15 minutes after she's done soaking.
  • Alternatively, you can rub her shoulders and neck to help her de-stress.

6. Draw a hot bath

To end the spa day, draw your mom a bubble bath. Ensure the water is not too hot, but warm enough to allow stiff muscles and joints to loosen up even further.

  • Use mild, pleasantly-scented hand soap to make the water bubbly. Light candles around the tub. If so desired, you could even light some incense – just don't overdo it as sometimes the scent can become overpowering.  Let Mom soak in silence.

Of course, you could always add some relaxing music in the background to further enhance the spa-like mood. And if your mom is in the mood for a glass of wine, then why not? It's her day, after all.
