This is Seabird Island First Nation located in the upper Fraser Valley, three kilometers northeast of the town of Agassiz, British Columbia. The English designation of Seabird Island is derived from the June 1858 grounding of the transport paddle wheeler Sea Bird, on an island, in the Fraser River, across from Sq'éwqel. Halq'emeylem for turn in the river , Sq'éwqel is referred to by Indian Reserve Commissioner (1878 - 1880) Gilbert M Sproat as Skow-a-kull in his allocation statement and accompanying sketch of Seabird Island. Sq'éwqel identified a village located at the northern tip of Seabird Island, across the river from Skw'átits or what is contemporarily known as Peter's Reserve. In June 1879, G. M. Sproat, Indian Reserve Commissioner, in consultation with interested First Nations people, allocated the island called Skow-a-kull as a reserve to be held in common by the people from Popkum, Skw'átits, Ohamil, Ska-wah-look, Hope, Union Bar and Yale. In 1958, Seabird Island was designated an independent band. Seabird Island Band exists to promote a healthier, self-sufficient, self-governing, unified and educated community. We believe that a healthy community is one that has achieved physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and cultural balance. Seabird Island Band will accomplish this mission with the energy of our youth, the wisdom of our Elders, the strength of our families, the vision and determination of our political leaders, the guidance of our spiritual and cultural leaders and the contributions of our staff members. Seabird Island continues to move forward in a good way. With community acceptance of the Land Code initiative in 2009, management of reserve lands and resources is now within our jurisdiction. My StoryIn 1997, while organizing the BC Games for Athletes with a Disability, I had the misfortune of being rear-ended, at a high speed, while exiting the highway. This began an on again, off again 2 year rehabilitation program at Fraser Valley Orthopedics & Sports Therapy. And although rehab was beneficial, I ended up with a permanent low back injury to L3, L4, L5 and the Sacroiliac Joint and a not so healthy 180 pounds.
