École William McDonald Middle School is Yellowknife’s only true middle school! Students have the opportunity to develop their literacy and social skills within all aspects of the academic program, the elective courses and co-curricular activities.
Our excellent school facilities provide the backdrop for student achievement in the academic subjects, the arts, physical education and the co-curricular activities. Our school staff, parent volunteers, and community representatives are all vital human resources through which our students receive support in their daily learning experiences at École William McDonald Middle School.
Not since birth has the adolescent brain gone through greater growth as it does in these three years. Our students are truly receptive and ready to "take charge" and we provide many opportunities for students to grow and challenge themselves.
Nestled amongst the trees, rocks, and houses lies the growing school of Sissons. École John Howard Sissons is centrally located in this peaceful, small and community-minded city. École J.H. Sissons school is privileged to accommodate over 320 students in a French Immersion setting from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. In addition, ÉJHS is a member of a larger family of schools within Yellowknife Education District No. 1, or simply YK1, which is the title of the school district. Our graduating students go to École William McDonald for Grade 6 to continue their French Immersion studies, a small middle school which is in walking distance of our school.

Route 51 Learning Institute is a facility designed to accommodate students from 15 to 21 years of age. This outreach school offers an alternative setting to daily high school programming. It is a centre where students can enrol in, and complete, high school credit courses.
We offer Alberta Distance Learning courses in all academic subjects for grades 10 to 12, as well as CTS courses and Work Experience programs. Courses are available in print or online formats. Students can come in to the school to work on assignments and/or take additional course assignments home with them.
We offer Wellness programming the form of CTS modules and healthy food daily.
Students need to be self-motivated learners, and able to read and write at grade level.
