These bands are located on the northeastern and northwestern end of Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland between Comox Valley to the south and Smith Inlet to the north. Each of the bands has its own distinctive name but, as a result of the work of early anthropologists, these bands, as a group have come to be widely know as the Southern Kwakiutl.

The Campbell River Hospice Society believes that all persons facing death have a right to: Comfort, freedom from physical and emotional pain. Peace, respect for spiritual and cultural values. Dignity, respect for individual and social concerns. And, those experiencing a loss due to death have the need and the right to grieve. Therefore... the Campbell River Hospice Society exists to provide compassionate support and companionship to meet the needs of those individuals facing death, their families and friends and to those grieving a loss due to death. We recognize the special needs of a person who has a life threatening illness. The focus is not on curing them but on treating symptoms and making them comfortable.
