Yellowquill College was founded by the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council in 1984 as a physical manifestation of the belief of “Indian Control of Indian Education”. Those visionary leaders saw that a better future was possible through a First Nation-owned and operated post-secondary institute. On October 1, 1984, the College opened in the newly renovated residential school on Crescent Road West in Portage la Prairie on 45 acres of Long Plain First Nation Land. The opening of a First Nation college provided an alternative for aboriginal adults wanting to pursue their educational goals.

In 1977, the Treaty Land Entitlement Committee of Manitoba Inc. was formed to begin negotiations on behalf of Manitoba First Nations to settle outstanding TLE's with Canada.It is important to note that the province of Manitoba was not involved in the negotiation of Treaties, or in the initial allocation of lands after the Treaties were signed. From the time Manitoba entered Confederation in 1870, the federal government retained control over unallocated Crown lands in the province, along with other natural resources. The Manitoba Natural Resources Transfer Agreement (MNRTA) of 1930, which formed part of the Constitution Act 1930, transferred control and administration of these resources and lands to Manitoba, but required the province to provide Canada with sufficient unoccupied Crown land to fulfill outstanding TLE obligations to Manitoba First Nations.

Fundamental to our work are the principles of compassion and generosity, and a steadfast belief in people's ability to transform their lives. Founded in 1977, a small group of committed individuals named as the Cornerstone Counselling Society of Edmonton formed a faith based, not-for-profit agency. Their goals were to provide professional counselling services to anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. It provides us the unique ability to travel within a two-week time frame, all in convenient venues within one great city! We can see beautiful costumes, learn some history, and sample favourites from that country. This year, I decided to take on a few pavilions for the first week of Folklorama. The second week is my turn to volunteer with the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion at 364 Dufferin Avenue.Nayong Pilipino PavilionI always think of how lucky we are, as a community, to be given two weeks to share our culture with Winnipeg! My highlight is definitely the hospitality of the volunteers. My family and I enjoyed the cultural dances from Kayumanggi Philippines Performing Arts.South SudanBeing a newly established country, this was my first time attending this pavilion. If I could summarize my experience in one word, it would be 'passion.' The emcee, in particular, was knowledgeable and proud of his country's history and the performances they were presenting.
